7.5" Iris

This is the rocket I will use for my Level 3 certification attempt. It was scratch built using fiberglassed 7.5" body tubes from Giant Leap rocketry. The nose cone is from PML, and the fins were made for me by Bill Rossi. I'm using a ROCKETMAN R18C parachute with deployment bag. For electronics I am using a blacksky AltAcc and a Missile Works RRC2 altimeters.

Dia: 7.5"; Length: 12' 8"; Wt.: 43 lbs. (without motor); Motor (1): 98mm
Status: Retired.

Flt Date Motor Comments
1) 9/25/99 M1939-W Level 3 attempt at HellFire 5. My first M motor flight. Excellent flight, but the main deployed early. Sustained a small zipper (despite zipperless design). Missile Works RRC2 reported 8876 feet. AltAcc reported 8842 feet, 5.5 Gs, 530 max. mph.
2) 5/13/00 J570-W (3) Second launch of the Iris and my first high power cluster. I used three J570-W motors in a cluster adaptor that slid into the 4 inch motor mount. Very nice flight. The cluster adaptor ejected (the retainer fell off) at apogee, but dual-deployment worked. The main chute tangled, landed hard, but no damage. Missile Works RRC2 reported 1938 feet. AltAcc reported 1764 feet, 9.1 Gs, 210 max. mph.
3) 6/10/00 L1120-W Wonderful flight on the full L 75mm motor. The dual-deployment worked as planned without any problems. Missile Works RRC2 reported 3672 feet. AltAcc reported 3786 feet, 8.3 Gs, 304 max. mph.
4) 9/16/00 M1939-W Excellent flight on the full M 98mm motor. The dual-deployment worked as planned without any problems. My Level 3 certification flight. Missile Works RRC2 reported 8844 feet. AltAcc reported 8601 feet, 6.4 Gs, 553 max. mph.
5) 10/20/00 L1120-W Launch for the ground breaking ceremony for the Western Institute of Technology in Cody, WY. Nice flight on the full L 75mm motor. The dual-deployment worked as planned without any problems. Missile Works RRC2 reported 3888 feet. AltAcc reported 3778 feet, 4.8 Gs, 296 max. mph.
6) 4/22/01 L1120-W Wonderful flight on the full L 75mm motor. The dual-deployment worked as planned the the main chute did not come completely out of the body tube until the backup charge fired. Missile Works RRC2 reported 3874 feet. AltAcc reported 3881 feet, 10.8 Gs, 312 max. mph.
7) 6/23/01 M1939-W Nice flight on the full M 98mm motor. The dual-deployment worked as planned. Missile Works RRC2 reported 9663 feet. AltAcc reported 9021 feet, 6.1 Gs, 529 max. mph.
8) 7/4/01 L1120-W Excellent evening flight on the full L 75mm motor for the pre-fireworks show in Cody. The dual-deployment worked as planned, and the rocket landed about 100 yards away. Missile Works RRC2 reported a steady tone, so something is wrong with it. IA-X96 reported 3923 feet, 5.9 Gs, 316 max. mph.
9) 10/20/01 M1315-W Excellent flight on the 75mm M motor. The nose cone came off at apogee, and pulled the main chute out a few seconds later. There was a one- to two-inch zipper in the zipperless end of the middle tube. Missile Works RRC2 reported 4255 feet. IA-X96 reported 5725 feet, 10.4 Gs, 369 max. mph. As the flight was off vertical, the RRC2 is probably closer to the correct altitude.
10) 8/17/02 M1939-W Excellent flight on the full M motor. The main chute deployed at apogee along with the drogue. Missile Works RRC2 reported 9730 feet. The uncalibrated AltAcc 2A reported 8292 feet, 7.2 Gs, 600 max. mph.
11) 8/18/02 M1550-R Excellent flight on the 75mm Redline M motor. Dual-deployment worked as planned. Missile Works RRC2 reported 5007 feet. The uncalibrated AltAcc 2A reported 4483 feet, 9.4 Gs, 442 max. mph.
12) 6/28/03 M2600-SS Excellent flight on the full M Smokey Sam motor. Dual-deployment worked as planned. Missile Works RRC2 reported 6733 feet. The AltAcc 2A reported 5636 feet, 8.8 Gs, 500 max. mph.
13) 9/06/03 M1939-W Excellent flight on the full M 98mm motor. Dual-deployment worked as planned. PrefectFlight reported 8757 feet. The AltAcc 2C did not record any data, though charges fired.
14) 7/03/04 M1690-P Excellent flight on the CTI standard propellant M 98mm motor. Pilot chute tangled around main chute lines, broke a fin on landing. PrefectFlight reported 9253 feet. The MissileWorks RRC2 reported 9613 feet.
